Marion County DHR Social Worker Receives 2009 Alabama Spirit of Adult Services Award
Renee Williams, a social worker with the Marion County Department of Human Resources (DHR), has been chosen to receive the 2009 Alabama Spirit of Adult Protective Services Award. As the award recipient, she will represent the state as Alabama’s nominee for the 2009 Spirit of National Adult Protective Service Association (NAPSA) Award.

May is Foster Care Month
Governor Bob Riley has proclaimed May as Foster Care Month in Alabama. Currently, there are more than 6,000 youth and children in foster care in the state. Foster Care Month helps emphasize the importance of the services that protect children from abuse and neglect.

Food Assistance Benefits to Increase
Beginning April 1, 2009, Alabamians receiving Food Assistance benefits will see an increase in their monthly allotments. This increase in food assistance benefits is due to the recent passing of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, commonly known as the Stimulus Bill.

Federal Grant to Benefit State’s Food Assistance Applicants awarded to DHR
A cooperative effort between state agencies has landed a $600,000 grant to help streamline the state’s food assistance application process and improve service. The grant, awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to the Department of Human Resources (DHR), is part of a larger initiative designed to modernize the state’s health and human services system and make it more customer focused.
